Facts and Figures

  • Delmas Freres was founded in 1867 to operate a regular service between La Rochelle and Ile de Re
  • As the fleet developed a regular service to Algeria was launched, followed by others covering North Africa, where Delmas started opening its own agencies
  • After joining the family in 1896, the name of Leonce Vieljeux was associated to the company that he already managed in common with the Delmas brothers
  • During WWI the company lost two thirds of its fleet but recovered and in 1925 created its first regular line to West Africa, mainly dealing with imports of tropical timber from Gabon
  • WWII caused huge losses to the Delmas fleet. While operating Liberty Ships to maintain its position on West Africa trade, the company, renamed Société Navale Delmas Vieljeux, started its fleet renewal again
  • Until the end of the 1980s, Delmas Vieljeux expanded and acquired or associated with a certain number of Shipping Lines (Chargeurs Réunis in the 1970s, NCHP in 1986…)
  • Delmas was acquired by the Bolloré Group in a takeover in 1991
  • In January 2006 Delmas was acquired by CMA CGM
  • Delmas continues to strengthen its presence operating 15 regular lines linking Africa to all the other continents
